Cryotherapy Treatment

In cosmetic treatments, cryotherapy has become an innovative development, providing a safe, efficient way to treat a variety of skin imperfections.

Although most skin lesions / imperfections are harmless, having them may leave you feeling self-conscious and keen to improve this aspect of your appearance. You may also find lesions such as skin tags or warts irritating or even painful because of their position.

Skin tag and wart removal with cryotherapy at the hands of a skilled medical professional is simple, easy, painless and associated with fewer risks than any other method of removal, including surgical incisions.

What is cryotherapy used for?

Cryotherapy is often used to treat a variety of skin lesions. Skin lesions are skin growths or patches that don’t look like the skin around them.

Cryotherapy offers a versatile solution for the removal of blemishes commonly encountered including:

  • Skin tags
  • Milia
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Actinic Keratosis (Scaly patches of skin caused by sun exposure)
  • Haemangiomas (Non cancerous reddish tumour formed of excess blood vessels)
  • Solar Lentigo (Darkened skin caused by UV damage)
  • Seborrheic Keratosis (Non  cancerous skin growth that looks waxy or scaly)
  • Pigmentation
  • Verrucae
  • Warts

How does it work?

A precise stream of high-pressure Nitrous Oxide gas is used in cryotherapy. This targeted freezing process kills undesirable tissue by causing cell membranes to break down and ice crystals to form in the intercellular fluid. The surrounding healthy tissue remains entirely unharmed.

Treatment

During your cryotherapy treatment, we will apply nitrous oxide to your skin using a special spray gun. You may feel a few seconds of discomfort similar to a stinging nettle on the skin. Stinging may continue for a few minutes post treatment but then settles.

The frozen skin of the lesion will turn white before taking one to two minutes to thaw to normal skin temperature. Depending on the size and thickness of the lesion, we may need to repeat the process once your skin has thawed out.

How long until I see results?

Over the next few days following your cryotherapy treatment, a scab will form over your skin lesion. This will typically take between one to two weeks to fall off, but it can take longer. All being well, the lesion will have gone, and your skin will look normal within four to six weeks. However, sometimes people do need a second treatment or even follow-up treatments at regular intervals.

During your initial consultation and following your treatment, we’ll be able to give you a better idea of what to expect in your individual case.
